Digipack: Analysis

Digipack is a patented style of CD or DVD packaging. It is one part of the promotional package for the music album.

Katy Perry - One of the Boys

the digipak has an overall girlish look. It gives out some 90's teenager vibes because that's how Katy is dressed-up, the skirt, ribbon in her hair, and clips. The artistry is also giving out a dreamy effect. The clouds are over-emphasized and the garden is littered with pink items such as the blanket and the record player. This theme is continued throughout the whole album cover. This almost forces the audience to look at the entire cover and notice how feminine it is. There is a very sweet vibe across the entire cover. The bubblegum font used, adds to the playful and funky feel, linking to the style of music such as pop and dance, something most typically listened to by tween girls. The artist is biting on her sunglasses and lounging in a position that could be considered sensual. The overall feel of the album cover is very ascetically pleasing. The CD also has a strawberry on it, which is in line with the feminine and nature-based theme of the digipak.

Katy's own name is written more broadly across the front cover. The album name is written at the bottom and doesn't stand out as much. This shows that Katy herself is given significance for the marketing of her music. Each of the panels has Katy on it, which means her image as a pop star is what is expected to attract her fans to listen to her music.

Billie Eilish - Island Waves

The digipack has a dark theme to it, not just in terms of the color black but also because of the conceptually dark imagery. Billie Eilish has an image of creating spooky songs and the album cover gives a good representation of her style of music. The front cover has Billie Eilish featured with a very freaky look. Her irises are missing and she gives out a menacing laugh. She's wearing all white and sitting on a messy bed. These are the mise-en-scenes used to create a harrowing effect. This hints her music is conceptual and dark.

The font used is sans-serif comic writing font. A spooky verse from one of her songs, 'When we all fall asleep where do we go?' adds to the sinister theme, and so will help get the attention of the audience. It is written in the corner, so the most attention remains on Billie herself.

The inside cover is also completely simple, only the lyrics of the songs written all over. The CD is a dull green color, so it stands out against the black. It is also in line with the then Billie Eilish's own get-up when she had dyed her hair green.
There is also no heavy usage of imagery and iconography, the entire theme is simple but very impactful in giving the chilling effect, which is unique to Billie Eilish's songs.
